PE and Sport

Experienced and enthusiastic PE department staff work closely to deliver this demanding yet thoroughly rewarding course. From Year 7 – 13, The Royal offers a whole range of sporting activities and teams to compliment the GCSE and OCR Sports Studies curriculum. Our students compete in a range of sports including football, athletics, swimming, table tennis, rugby, basketball, cricket, netball & rounders. We have many elite athletes including Olympic swimmers and professional football players who act as excellent role models. Pupils taking on the role of the leader have the opportunity to coach our primary school pupils after school, in a range of sports. Those choosing to be Officials also have this opportunity. In recent years, we have had a number of students officiating at the City and Inter-house competitions.

Throughout our curriculum, students will analyse performance, plan effective strategies and tactics and provide constructive feedback to improve performance. Through a wide range of well-planned and sequenced practical lessons, students will master skills, develop their techniques, whilst going the extra mile to ensure their peers and teammates are ready to perform alongside them. Students will strive to perform to their full potential on the Astro-turf pitch, sports hall, netball courts, sports fields, fitness suite and in our swimming pool. They will dare to be the best and most exciting performer in any sporting situation. Our KS3 curriculum will also prepare students for what lies ahead, developing their knowledge and understanding of key academic content, all in anticipation of choosing Physical Education as an academic pathway at KS4 and KS5.

Enrichment is also a large part of PE at The Royal School and a number of thriving clubs are offered most of the days of the week (in alignment with our period 6 enrichment programme). Students are given the opportunity to receive additional, more focused coaching from our sports specialists in football, netball, rounder’s, table tennis, rugby, gymnastics, cricket & basketball which are all offered at different times throughout the year.

Students continue their two hours of Core PE time per week. We encourage students to take ownership of their learning, applying accurate rules and regulations as officials, coaching one another and leading practical sessions to improve performance.  Similar to KS3, extra-curricular opportunities are integral. We have teams at KS4 in football, rugby, basketball, cricket, table tennis, athletics, swimming, netball & rounders. Our KS4 students are extremely successful in city sport and that is down to their hard work and commitment to sport.

Pupils opting to study Physical Education are given two options: GCSE in Physical Education (Edexcel) and OCR Cambridge National Sports Studies. Having both options means that there is something for every type of learner. The GCSE is a combination of examinations and practical assessment. The OCR Cambridge National Sports Studies is a combination of coursework, examination and practical assessment.
