All staff at the Royal Primary School regard the development of the whole child as critical. We have high expectations of academic success, but this does not detract from the fact that it is also the personal qualities that we embed in each of our pupils that will ultimately see them through to realise their ambitions and dreams.
In the Primary School, it is the form teachers who are ultimately responsible for the pastoral care of the pupils in their class, helping each of them to achieve and enjoy what they do. Our most recent school ISI inspection identified this pastoral care as outstanding noticing that pupils are expected to be good mannered, courteous and respectful of the feelings of others and that high standards of behaviour and values are maintained.
It is also important that the children get pleasure from both their own and others’ achievements. With this in mind, we have several pastoral support mechanisms in place to ensure that we quickly identify the needs of children and their families, addressing any learning or social issues effectively. This may be in the form of whole class activities, a small group intervention, or through 1:1 support delivered by outside agencies that we partner with.
In addition, our cross-curricular approach to the delivery of Personal, Social and Health education (PSHCEE) encourages awareness of moral values within our pupils, developing self-respect, healthy relationships and an understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures and beliefs.
Our pupils are also encouraged to think about and care for the environment.
At the centre of all our teaching, as well as school life beyond the classroom, are the Royal’s five core values of Risk, Respect, Community, Initiative, and Trust. It is important to us as a school that pupils are openly rewarded for their efforts and that they, in turn, learn to praise the achievement of others.
Confidence and independence is developed from a very early age with even our youngest and least confidence children being given the opportunity to perform in assemblies or productions.
