Careers Development at The Royal School

The Royal School doesn't just focus on children's current education, but prioritises raising aspirations for their future.  We encourage children to be curious and eager to explore interests and opportunities through our curriculum and careers teaching. Through events such as careers week and guest speakers, children are provided with a wealth of skills and knowledge in order to inspire their bright futures.

Careers Week

During careers week, our learning behaviours of explorer, positivity, collaborator, reflector, adaptor and achiever are explored through engaging in play, success stories and parent presentations based upon career choices. Themes of stereotyping, raising aspirations and breaking down barriers are explored within curriculum lessons.

EYFS and KS1

Fostering ambition in our younger children is crucial as it lays the foundation for their future success and personal development. Encouraging ambition helps children to set goals, develop a sense of purpose and cultivates resilience in the face of challenges. Activities such as a pop-up careers village help us to do that. Children become vets, builders, hairdressers, performers, emergency service workers and shopkeepers. This is all explored through play, interaction and communication.

'You could be a singer, a hairdresser or a firefighter. I want to be a vet when I group up".    Year 2 child

KS2

In KS2, children are inspired by their parents and the wider community. Our parents have a wealth of knowledge and a variety of careers which they use to support our children through presentations, talks and workshops.  Children investigate a range of career options such as: STEM, creative roles, literacy roles and trades. We encourage important life skills such as resilience, creativity and critical thinking, which are all essential for navigating the modern world.

"I enjoyed the careers week because the physiotherapist gave me the  inspiration to consider that as a job because I like science". Year 4 child
"I am patient and resilient, so an engineer would be a good role for me". Year 6 child

Careers in our Curriculum

Integrating careers into the curriculum promotes inclusivity, diversity and equal access to opportunities, preparing students for adaptability to an ever-evolving job market. Throughout the Cornerstones curriculum there are opportunities to explore different careers, its thematic approach demonstrating that skills can be applied differently across a number of fields.

Let’s Raise Aspirations Together

It is exciting to work together, to empower children to dream big, pursue their passions, and embark on a journey of lifelong learning and exploration as they prepare for the exciting world of work ahead of them!

Our learning behaviour of communication is key when exploring the children’s interests, hobbies and dreams. At home, on the way to school or at the weekend, discuss your child’s interests, challenge stereotypes and encourage your child that they can do anything.
