English
Becoming confident in speaking, reading and writing unlocks the potential in every child to learn… that is why our curriculum is so rich and inspiring. It provides all children with the support they need and is a gateway to explore communication in all its forms.
English is taught in units which focus on specific genres such as narrative or non-chronological reports. This is supported through guided and class reading, where inspirational texts are unpicked in detail, as well as through spelling and handwriting. We use Teach Handwriting to develop cursive script.
English teaching is structured in three ‘phases’, where children explore the genre, learn new skills and apply them to their writing.
More information on the genres covered in each year is available on the year group page.
Spelling & Handwriting
Intent
At The Royal School, our intention is to foster a strong foundation in spelling and handwriting skills that will not only allow our pupils to communicate effectively but also to express their thoughts and ideas confidently across the curriculum.
- We aspire for pupils to understand spelling rules and apply them accurately within their writing. Our curriculum is designed to progressively develop phonetic knowledge and spelling strategies that are appropriate for each child's age and ability.
- We aim to instil a clear focus on handwriting as a vital component of communication. Our intent is to encourage pupils to develop a fluent and legible handwriting style using the Letter-join handwriting scheme, which becomes automatic as they progress through school, supporting their written expression in all subjects.
Implementation
The implementation of our spelling and handwriting programme is underpinned by structured and evidence-based strategies:
- Explicit Teaching of Spelling Rules: Daily spelling sessions, that teaches spelling patterns and rules, are built into the timetable, with targeted interventions for those who may require additional support.
- Daily Handwriting Practice: Each class allocates dedicated time for handwriting practice, using the Letter-join handwriting scheme. This includes modelled writing, guided practice, and individual practice. We encourage pupils to use their best handwriting in all written work.
- Use of Technology and Resources: We integrate technology, such as spelling apps and interactive boards, to enhance learning. Resources are selected to engage learners and cater to a variety of learning styles, including visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic approaches.
- Regular Assessment and Feedback: We employ formative assessments to monitor progress in spelling and handwriting. Teachers provide timely and specific feedback, allowing pupils to identify areas for improvement and to celebrate their successes.
