Music Lessons

Music plays a key role at The Royal School and we provide plenty of opportunities to compliment the class music lessons. There are a range of enrichment activities after-school for pupils to become involved in and hone their musical skills, such as Ukulele, Ocarina, Orchestra, Primary and Senior Choirs.

Throughout the academic year, there are numerous school events allowing pupils the opportunities to perform and develop their confidence.

Events include:

  • Performing Arts Concerts
  • Recitals
  • Inter-House Music Competitions
  • Chapel Services
  • Assemblies
  • Plays and productions

Individual Music Lessons

In addition to class music lessons, pupils are offered the opportunity to study an individual instrument(s) of their choice. The Department is run by the Director of Music, Mrs Lucy Simmonds, who works with a team of professional peripatetic music specialist teachers from Wolverhampton Music Service and private teachers.

Which instruments can a pupil at The Royal learn?

Currently, we have specialist teachers who provide weekly lessons in these instruments:

  • Strings: Violin (private only), Viola, Cello, Guitar, Bass, Ukulele
  • Woodwind: Flute, Clarinet, Recorder, Saxophone, Oboe, Bassoon
  • Brass: Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Tenor/Baritone Horn, Euphonium, Tuba
  • Along with Piano, Keyboard, Drums, Dhol, Tabla and Singing

However, if a pupil is looking to learn an instrument we do not currently offer, we will always try to accommodate that request.

Charges

Private Music lessons are 1:1 and cost £16.50 per 30-minute lesson. Mr McGhee offers violin lessons whilst Ms Bucior offers private piano lessons.
Paired/small group lessons from Wolverhampton Music Service are at a cost of £78.50 per term. We currently boast 273 pupils choosing to take lessons through our partnership with the Music Service.

Lessons are usually booked in the summer term to begin the following September. However, if you are interested in starting music lessons at any other time, please download the form below and send to Mrs Lucy Simmonds at lsimmonds@theroyal.school. We will do our best to accommodate your request.

Please note that ½ term’s notice must be given should you wish to stop receiving music lessons.
